Introduction

The 29th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP29) is taking place in Baku, Azerbaijan, between the 11th-22nd November.

The following are a list of sessions hosted/co-hosted by Adaptation Without Borders at the new Climate, Peace and Transboundary Resilience Pavilion.

Expanding efforts beyond the national level for scaling-up adaptation action

15th November, 13:15-14:45 (AZT), Side Event Room 5, Area B

This session will bring together thought leaders across adaptation science, policy, and practice to explore the future of climate adaptation at scale.

Adaptation Without Borders: Knowledge Sharing and International Cooperation to Manage Transboundary Climate Risks

18th November, 15:30-17:00 (AZT)

This high-level event with a group of regional representatives will discuss what cooperation to manage transboundary climate risks means in practice and how to build resilience in vulnerable regions affected by this global challenge.

Climate risks affect neighbouring countries through shared ecosystems or infrastructure and can cross continents and oceans. Transboundary climate risks include food and water shortages, threats to trade and energy supplies, widening inequalities, forced migrations and geopolitical conflicts. At last year’s UN Climate Change Conference, Parties recognized that climate change impacts are often transboundary and involve complex, cascading risks that require knowledge-sharing and international cooperation.

Organised by the International Network of Boundary Organisations.

Transboundary climate, adaptation and mitigation risks in Africa: perspectives and regional cooperation

Managing transboundary climate risks in mountain areas: the Hindu Kush Himalayas and beyond

19th November, 13:00-14:30 (AZT)

Join SEI at COP29 for an insightful discussion on managing transboundary climate risks in mountain areas, focusing on the Hindu Kush Himalayas and beyond. This event, convened by SEI and the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), will spotlight the unique challenges and global importance of mountain ecosystems in the context of climate resilience.

Transboundary climate impacts are of rising concern in the policy landscape. Yet the global importance of mountain ecosystems, and their potential to not only receive but propagate climate risk across borders, is often overlooked. This event will explore how policymakers and practitioners can help strengthen resilience to transboundary climate risks in mountain areas through global and regional mechanisms. It will i) highlight opportunities to ensure transboundary climate risks are represented in the different negotiating tracks on the road towards COP30; and ii) take a deep dive into the Hindu Kush Himalaya to explore how its regional member countries can take concrete steps towards stronger cooperation on adaptation.
